Aaron’s Dashboard
Aaron Rents needed to allow regional and general managers to be able to view store data in real-time on the web and on the move. This required creating an application that would recognize mobile devices and their capabilities. The solution utilizes ASP.NET (C#), AJAX, CSS 2-3 styling, user controls, and Telerik RadControls. The mobile version of the application adjusts certain user controls so that the information can be displayed on devices that don’t support flash or CSS3. Finally, the application supports two types of authentication: Domain Authentication and POS credentials.

In the beginning of January 2010, John Trainor (CTO) approached me with a dilemma. Every year they have a National Managers Meeting around the end of March and there’s a massive amount of emails & faxes going back and forth with an unfathomable amount of paperwork. Previously, a manager would go to a website to fill out a single form which would then be emailed to the unfortunate individual handling the event. The unlucky associate would then have to fax additional paperwork to the manager to receive additional information such as how many people they’re bringing, shirt sizes, transportation needs, etc.

Aaron’s cares about their associates. They want their company to be healthy and they constantly invoke team spirit. They asked for my help to build Aaron’s Health Challenge to encourage their associates to work out and log the event so they can win prizes. The front-end utilizes DotNetNuke and can be accessed outside the Aaron’s network, so associates can log events from their home. The Challenge itself, though, is a completely custom application written in .NET/C# that features user profiles, a badge system, a calendar of a users activities, the ability to report a cheater, and more.

When I was hired by Academy Medical, they were in desperate need of an online “image” overhaul. Their original site was poorly designed and distracted users from what they actually do. Their new website utilizes a template purchased from a local Gainesville, FL company called Austin Michael. Even with a template, there was still a fair amount of work required to make it work for Academy Medical. First, I sat down with the owner and discussed what he wants the website to be… who should the focus audience be. It’s a much tougher question than you’d think.

When I was 13 years old, I received my first computer… a Packard Bell with a 133Mhz processor and a 56K Modem. My first experience to the web was using AOL and I hated it from the get go. Finding information about the Miami Dolphins was painstakingly slow. I had to go to different groups/web sites to find everything I wanted. So, I decided to start my own website called “AJ’s Miami Dolphins Page” but I had no idea how large of a following I would eventually have.

Prior to March 2008, the Mobile Campus website was geared towards universities. However, we decided to make students our primary focus, thus requiring a major website overhaul. Working with our VP of Marketing, Brandon Hartman, we started to search out a design firm that could put something together at a low cost. To save costs, the design firm would only create the homepage template. It was my job to slice the website in Photoshop and actually make it a website.

FourLeaf IT redeveloped their previous website to allow the owners to easily update the content without help from an IT Specialist. We choose Volusion as it has a full features backend that gives the user the “power” to do simple things like review statistics or customize a template. While there are more powerful solutions, Volusion has proved to be the most reliable and easiest to use.
